Real Event OCD centres on a real event from the past, around which intrusive thoughts and endless re-checking and questioning develop.
What it looks like
Repeatedly bringing up the event, a constant search for moral certainty, seeking reassurance from others and avoiding triggers that are reminders of it.
Why seeking certainty doesn’t help
Every check brings momentary relief and strengthens the cycle.
The relief is short, and the need returns with greater force — this is how the ritual becomes a trap.
How it differs from ordinary regret
Ordinary regret fades over time and allows learning. In OCD it becomes an endless investigation that never reaches a conclusion.
What does help
Focused treatment that teaches you to tolerate uncertainty and gradually reduce the rituals, instead of arguing with the content of the thought.
What not to do
There’s no point trying to prove to yourself that nothing happened. That argument feeds the disorder.
Good to Know
An accurate diagnosis is essential — not every intrusive thought is OCD. A professional assessment will determine the right treatment direction.
