Clinical and Educational Psychologist — What’s the Difference?

The Clinic – Ameer Salameh

Two specialisations recognised by law, with different emphases — and when each is relevant.

“Psychologist” is a title protected by law in Israel, but within it there are several different specialisations. The difference between them matters when choosing a professional.

The common foundation

In Israel, the practice of psychology is regulated by the Psychologists Law, 5737-1977. Only those listed in the Register of Psychologists may practise, and only in the specialisation in which they are certified. The law currently recognises six specialisations: clinical, educational, social-occupational-organisational, rehabilitation, developmental and medical.

All psychologists complete at least a master’s degree, followed by a structured internship of several years that includes supervision and examinations.

Clinical psychologist

The clinical specialisation focuses on the assessment and treatment of emotional distress and mental disorders, at every age. A clinical psychologist provides psychotherapy and psychodiagnostic assessment, and works with conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, eating disorders and more complex conditions.

Educational psychologist

The educational specialisation focuses on children, adolescents and the system around them — school, kindergarten and parents. An educational psychologist assesses learning and developmental difficulties, advises parents and educational staff, and supports students. In Israel, educational psychologists are also employed in the educational psychology services (SHEFACH) of local authorities.

And how is this different from a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a doctor who has specialised in mental health, and is therefore the only one of the three who may prescribe medication. A psychologist does not prescribe medication. In many cases the work is complementary: psychotherapy with a psychologist alongside medication follow-up with a psychiatrist.

  • Clinical psychologist — assessment and treatment of emotional distress
  • Educational psychologist — children, learning and the education system
  • Psychiatrist — a doctor who diagnoses and prescribes medication
  • Clinical social worker / certified therapist — emotional therapy in various settings

What this means for you

This clinic offers support in both the clinical and the educational fields — making it possible to address both the emotional world and the learning and developmental context, especially with children and adolescents whose difficulties show up on both levels.

You can verify that any psychologist is listed in the Ministry of Health’s Register of Psychologists.
